| Occupying one of the most Idyllic spots in Cadgwith, Cornwall, this self catering cottage stands just yards from the beach. A paved Patio for sitting out and watching all the fishing and boating activity, or for just sunbathing and snoozing, ends in a short flight of steps down to the beach itself. In the summer the gentle splash of the waves is about the only noise you will hear. In winter there is no better spot for being warm and cosy even when the Atlantic waves lash the rocks outside. The house was originally built as a capstan house for one of the many seine boat companies in the Cadgwith. The beams supporting the capstan remain. With the disappearance of the pilchard industry at the turn of the century the house became a fishing loft for the storage of pots and fishing gear and the boats were then pulled up the beach by means of the new petrol winch in the centre of the village.
We are not sure of the date but a man arrived in the village from a wreck who was deaf and dumb. No-one knew where he came from or what his name was, so he was affectionately known as "Dummie" and lived here upstairs using the loft as his fish loft together with the other fishermen. His photo is on the wall by the fireplace which was given to us by the lady who lived next door in Beach Cottage. Lizzie Anne Jane. She was born there and lived there into her eighties and her photo is also on the wall. The entrance to the flat was via a door and steps from the path, and of course there was no water, electricity, or drainage at this time. We are not sure when Dummie died but after that the fisherman used the loft and the hand winch on the forecourt. Our father bought the place in 1956 from an artist by the name of Donnington who made the horse on the wall in the main bedroom. Our father converted it in 1957 as you see it now.The sea has only been inside once in living memory in the storm of December 1989 when sea water reached the top of the stairs! It was a combination of spring tide, easterly gale, ground sea, low pressure and a freak wave which broke the door. Unfortunately we have been flooded twice with the rain as well so it is not possible to provide a smart carpet. We do hope to continue making improvements though, so please take time to fill in the questionnaire you will be given during your stay.
